The Prisoner

Here is a link to my Video. I had some trouble uploading straight onto here due to some errors on the website. I have created myself a Vimeo account so I have uploaded it onto there instead. After three whole weeks of organising, planning and creating my video, I have finally finished it. I am very happy with how it has turned out however as always there are aspects that I would definitely want to improve or change. But that always happens after the filming! I will upload a more detailed analysis of my video later on.

Enjoy!

  1. I'm glad you've set up a Vimeo account. It's useful to be able to access your videos in one place. You can embed your video into your blog using the "share" icon.

00:07 - A good opening shot, using an ELS to establish location. Generally, you've kept the camera quite steady, although you perhaps hold the shot a little longer than you should. You don't need the move at the end, as Sam walks past the camera
00:32 - Again, a well-framed shot; good angle and composition
00:44 - Your reverse angle works well; it's good that you're using different shot distances since you need to do this in the final piece. Your tracking is fairly smooth as well
[note] Some of your credits vanish a little too quickly. I would suggest 4s as the minimum you would want them onscreen (including fades)
01:00 - Some more quite well-framed shots. I think you hold some of them a little too long
01:07 - Your location is very good
01:20 - It might be suggested that at some points you break the 180 degree rule (don't worry about this, since you've not been taught it yet...!) However, I think you get away with it because you are effectively creating a montage
01:31 - Some of the editing might be a little tighter (for example, the MCU of Sam after he goes through the gate, you can see him paused before starting to walk - beginning this shot a few moments later would solve this)
01:40 - Good use of a pan, here, although I would try to make it a little more steady next time
02:04 - I do like the location. Just a little too much walking through it...!
02:20 - Framing here is a little rough - I would have used more composed static shots. Try not to chop the tops of people's heads off, if you can avoid it... It's a shame that after all the build up, the actual conversation lacks the same level of composition that the previous sequence had.
02:35 - The continuity in the editing is slightly off here, when you cut to the CU of Sam. I think a straight edit to Ben might have been better than the whip-pan you use...

Overall, I think you demonstrates a good deal of skill in the build-up - there are a range of shots used and some quite effective camera moves. Your use of location is excellent and there is some excellent composition. I think the dialogue sequence is less successful; you might have used more individual shots and the framing/ editing are both a little less effective. But it's a good attempt at constructing a coherent narrative - well done.

  2. Thankyou for the feedback Sir. I'll take it into consideration in my next project.
